Alta Mae was born on March 18th, 1896 in Monroe County, Indiana. Alta Mae's father was Enoch Homer Butcher and her mother was Laura Agnes Shields. Her paternal grandfather was Matthew Butcher; her maternal grandparents were David Thomas Shields and Sarah Frances Mize. She had a brother and two sisters, named Alva Thomas, Flora and Gladys Elnora. She was the oldest of the four children. She died at the age of 74 on October 29th, 1970 in Hollywood, Broward Co., Florida. She was buried in Clear Creek Cemetery, Clear Creek, Monroe Co., Indiana.-
