On July 15, 1934 Irene Schiesser married Ben Guthu who had 4 children from his previous marriage in 1917 to Eva Hanson, who preceded him in death in 1928. BeforeBen married Irene in 1934, Donna Marie Guthu was adopted out of the family, to a family by the name of Stratton. When Ben and Irene married, they had 3 children together. Ben did not adopt the Schiesser children, from Irene's first marriage to Paul Schiesser. The 4 children were Bertha Augusta, Ella Helen, Gertrude Lillian and Carl Lawrence, therefore having the Guthu and Schiesser names in the family.
From his mother's( Helen Bennett Guthu's ) obit: "Benny is from Big Falls, WI."
From Simon Guthu's obit (Ben's father): Benjamin made his home in Ogdensburg, WI. These are both corect.
From June Steinbarth: "Uncle Ben had four boys, then a daughter. The mother, Eva Hansen, died at that daughter's birth. He asked my folks if they'd take care of the baby, and they were going to, but couldn't get there because it was winter. So, a banker (Stratton from Waupaca) took care of her until my folks could get her. But the banker and his wife fell in love with her, and wanted to adopt her, which Uncle Ben didn't want. But the banker put the board real high so he would consent to letting them adopt the baby, which they did. Later, Uncle Ben married again. They (Ben and Irene) had three children together. The girl was killed in a hunting accident. Newspaper article is in file.
From Sylvia Schulz, "When Ben was a young man, he was chopping wood, and a sliver put one eye out."
From Ben, "I was a young man and I was whittling on a piece of wood, and pulled the knife toward me and it slipped and put out my right eye." He had a glass eye on that side.
Uncle Ben sent info in April of 1975 indicating that Tom Christiansen, wife Helen, or Ardythe Koteski, (Arthur's daughters) have the old family Bible, which would have records.
I (Sylvia Guthu Hildebrandt) talked to Ardythe Koteski and she did indicate that she is in possession of the old family Bible. (May 1997)
I (Sylvia) found mention of grandpa Ben listed in the Standard Atlas of Waupaca County, under a listing called The Patron's Reference Directory for 1923. It said Ben Guthu, Blacksmith, Big Falls.
Facts about this person:
