(Roane Co Family History page. 192). A Walker relative says that one Drennen girl was raised by a Major Renick after one of the Indian raids left her an orphan. Marriage date also showing as 4/25/1786.

Received from Louise Fendrich...not sure of source, but probably "The Boggs Family" by Alvin L. & Nartha Ann (Boggs) Rhods. John Attie Boggs probably came to Greenbrier Co., VA, along with his younger brother Francis Charles Boggs; {kh-all records I had previously show Francis was his Older brother}. they both purchased land in Greenbrier Co., and the neighboring co., in 1775. John married Susan (Day) Drennen on April 25, 1786; she was twenty-two, he was forty years old. She was born 1764 and died 1866. They were married by John McCall, a catholic. this is recorded in Greenbrier co., Book #2, page #9. Her parents were Lawrence and Sara (Day) Drennen; her grandparents were Walter and Susan (Wyle) Drennen. Nathaniel Day was a son of Christopher Day, date of birth 1635 in Wales Co. * Her parents were killed by Indians, along with several other men or boys. They also killed a baby brother or sister. The Indians surprised the men and boys in a corn field where they were hoeing corn. The men had stacked their weapons, and hoed down a long row of corn away from their weapons. the Indians then surprised them and killed and scalped them; one survived being scalped. the Indians then went to the cabin, broke in and took the women and children captive. they also took a baby, cut it in half, then hung the two halves in a tree. they took Susan's mother, her and a brother, plus a horse, and made their escape. Susan said the next morning that her mother was exhausted and unable to move, so an Indian walked up behind her and killed her with a tomahawk; some days later and at night, the Indians placed an old Indian on guard. He was sitting on a rock, but kept nodding off to sleep. Susan noticed the horse was looking past the old Indian at something. she sat very quiet; suddenly a huge volley of shots rang out, and a band of white settlers attacked the camp and killed all the Indians and scalped them and threw their bodies into the fire. {kh-I have a longer and more detailed account, written by James H. Hodam, great-nephew of John Boggs and Susan Drennin}. * She was then raised by Major Renniy and his wife, who was the sister to James Madison, who was or became an American President. This was on squatters land, purchased by John Boggs, on little Sewell Valley. {NOTE: KH. IN VIEW OF INFO RE COURT RECORDS AND PENSION ACCOUNTS - SEE LAWRENCE DRENNEN - I BELIEVE THIS ACCOUNT REFERS TO SUSAN'S MOTHER SARAH DAY, NOT TO SUSAN. I BELIEVE IT WAS SARAH DAY'S MOTHER AND FATHER THAT WERE KILLED AND SCALPED. ALSO SEE SARAH DAY'S NOTES FOR HER POSSIBLE PARENTAGE.

Virginia Boggs 1784-1805, age 21, daughter of John and Susan (Drennen) Boggs was in love with a boy named West Hickman, and wanted to marry him. Her father John refused permission, and went on a trip to Lynchburg, Virginia to buy cattle. While there he had a premonition that something was wrong at home. He hurried back home. When he arrived it was too late; his favorite daughter had hanged herself. I suspect that she was his oldest child at 21 years old. Many think that this tragedy caused him to make the move to Roane County.
