His paternal grandparents were Rudolph de Gand and Gisele de Luxemburg; his maternal grandparents were Hugh de MONTFORT and Alice de BEAUFFOU. He had six brothers and five sisters, named Henry de, Ralph de, Geoffrey de, Robert de, Gilbert de, Walter de, Felia de, Emma de, Matilda de, Alice de and Agnes de.
