Philip William Steer
Philip was born on January 28th, 1846 in
51, Mount Street, Devonport and his baptism took place on December 25th, 1846.
1 Philip's father was
Thomas Steer and his mother was
Mary Ann Brooks. His paternal grandparents were
George Steer and
Elizabeth Sherrill. He had five brothers and a sister, named
George,
Robert,
George,
Herbert,
Edmund and
Ada. He died at the age of 72 in 1918 in
Portsmouth.

Philip William STEER is listed as living at 14 Nelson Rd, Landport [Millwright] in the 1887 & 1894 directories of Portsmouth : and later as living at 5 Widley Rd, Landport [now Stamshaw] in the 1904 directory : and finally as living at 13 Widley Road, as a Shopkeeper, in the 1912 directory. In 1873 the modern Portsea Island Mutual Co-operative Society was set up, its first shop being opened in a rented property in Charles St, Landport : it is said by my cousin Vera Steer that PWS was a founder member of this CWS [known still as PIMCO] and that his Co-op Number was 3. Charles Street is quite near Nelson Road
In 1918 directory there is a Thomas Whitelaw PETTIGREW of 36 Dover Road, Copnor
