Matilda was born in 1867 in Godalming Surrey.1  Matilda's father was Job Steer and her mother was Sarah Harwood.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry Steer and Lydia Etherton. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Edmund, George, Job, Mark, Eli, Mary and Alice.  She was the youngest of the eight children.
