Edmund was born in 1842 and his baptism took place on June 19th, 1842 in Wisborough Green, Sussex.1   Edmund's father was Job Steer and his mother was Sarah Harwood.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Steer and Lydia Etherton. He had four brothers and three sisters, named George, Job, Mark, Eli, Mary, Alice and Matilda.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
