George was born in 1844 in Wisborough Green, Sussex and his baptism took place there on October 27th, 1844.1 2  George's father was Job Steer and his mother was Sarah Harwood.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Steer and Lydia Etherton. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Edmund, Job, Mark, Eli, Mary, Alice and Matilda.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
