David was born in 1840 and his baptism took place on June 8th, 1840 in Pulborough.1  David's father was James Steer and his mother was Ursula Steyning.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Steare and Mary Hawkins. He had eight brothers named James, William, Thomas, George, Charles, David, Harry and Edward.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.
