Charles was born in 1833 and his baptism took place on September 15th, 1833 in Pulborough.1  Charles' father was James Steer and his mother was Ursula Steyning.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Steare and Mary Hawkins. He had eight brothers named James, William, Thomas, George, David, Harry, David and Edward.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 23 in 1856.  He was buried on March 17th, 1856 in Pulborough.2
