John was born about 1851 in Elsecar Yorkshire.1   John's father was William STEER and his mother was Harriet STEER. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named Fred, Elick, Josuah, Colin, Birket, George, Frank, Adelaide, Harriet and Agnes.  He was the oldest of the eleven children.
