Fred was born about 1854 in Elsecar Yorkshire.1   Fred's father was William STEER and his mother was Harriet STEER. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named John, Elick, Josuah, Colin, Birket, George, Frank, Adelaide, Harriet and Agnes.  He was the second oldest of the eleven children.
