Ernest's father was Alexander Henry Yates and his mother was Emma Kay Mather. His maternal grandparents were Ralph Mather and Ann Mayoh. He had two sisters named Alice and Margery. He was the youngest of the three children. He died at the age of 87 in July 1983 in Coventry.²
