Sarah was born in 1836 in Saddleworth and her baptism took place there on September 18th, 1836.1 2  Sarah's father was Robert Whitehead and her mother was Betty Wade. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Squire, John, Robert, Ann and Minerva.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
