Robert was born in 1849 in Saddleworth.  Robert's father was Robert Whitehead and his mother was Betty Wade. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Squire, John, Ann, Sarah and Minerva.  He was the sixth oldest of the seven children.
