Mary was born in December 1915 in Oldham.1  Mary's father was Frank Whitehead and her mother was Hannah Shaw.  Her paternal grandparents were George Eli Whitehead and Sarah Dyson; her maternal grandparents were Henry Shaw and Sarah Wood. She had three brothers and a sister, named Shaw, George, Harry and Dorothy.  She was the third oldest of the five known children.
