Dorothy was born in December 1918 in Oldham.1  Dorothy's father was Frank Whitehead and her mother was Hannah Shaw.  Her paternal grandparents were George Eli Whitehead and Sarah Dyson; her maternal grandparents were Henry Shaw and Sarah Wood. She had three brothers and a sister, named Shaw, George, Harry and Mary.  She was the second youngest of the five known children.
