Septimus was born in December 1899 in Tynemouth.1  Septimus' father was Frederick C Westphal and his mother was Elizabeth Jane Coultard.  His paternal grandparents were Heinrich Christian Frederick  Westpfahl and (Juliane) Charlotte Focke. He had two brothers named Frederick and George.  He was the second oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother named Thomas.
