Frederick was born in March 1896 in Tynemouth.1  Frederick's father was Frederick C Westphal and his mother was Elizabeth Jane Coultard.  His paternal grandparents were Heinrich Christian Frederick  Westpfahl and (Juliane) Charlotte Focke. He had two brothers named Septimus and George.  He was the oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother named Thomas.
