Frederick was born in 1855 in Bremen. Frederick's father was Heinrich Christian Frederick  Westpfahl and his mother was (Juliane) Charlotte Focke.  His paternal grandparents were Christian Westphal and Rebecca Fricken. He had a brother and two sisters, named Carl, Engle and Annie.  He was the second youngest of the four known children. He had three half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Christian, Heinrich, Johann, Sophie, Bertha and Louise.  He died at the age of 72 in December 1927 in Tynemouth.1

‌Frederick and Elizabeth were married in March 1895 in Tynemouth.1   They had three sons named Frederick, Septimus and George.
