Mary's father was John William Walsh and her mother was Clara Winterbottom.  Her maternal grandparents were James Winterbottom and Elizabeth Ann Navin. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Jack, Frank, Clarence, Rosie and Lilian.  She was the oldest of the six children.  She died at the age of 74 in November 1992 in Oldham.²
