John was born in January 1772 in Harwood and his baptism took place on January 11th, 1772 at Turton Chapel.1  John's father was Ellis Vickers and his mother was Mary Crook.  His maternal grandparents were John Crook and Hannah (Ann) Twisse. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Richard, Thomas, Peter, Ann and Alice.  He was the third youngest of the six children.
