John was born in 1828 in Manchester.1  John's father was James Tomlinson and his mother was Ann Craven. He had four brothers and four sisters, named James, William, George, Alfred, Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth and Charlotte.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.
