George was born in 1846 in Manchester.1  George's father was James Tomlinson and his mother was Ann Craven. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, James, William, Alfred, Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth and Charlotte.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.
