Charlotte was born in 1838 in Manchester and her baptism took place on February 11th, 1838 at Manchester Cathedral.1 2  Charlotte's father was James Tomlinson and her mother was Ann Craven. She had five brothers and three sisters, named John, James, William, George, Alfred, Sarah, Mary and Elizabeth.  She was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
