James was born in May 1900 in Whitby (Ellesmere Port).1  James' father was George Timmis and his mother was Sarah Jones. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Joseph, George, Thomas, Polly, Elizabeth, Sarah, Martha and Elsie.  He was the sixth oldest of the nine known children.
