Samuel was born in 1846 in Huddersfield and his baptism took place on April 12th, 1846 at St. Peter (Huddersfield).1  Samuel's father was George Stocks and his mother was Priscilla Thornton.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Stocks and Lydia Wilkinson. He had two brothers named James and Alfred.  He was the oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother and five half-sisters, named Ainley, Priscilla, Anne, Agnes, Mary and George.

‌Samuel and Selina were married in a religious ceremony on July 12th, 1868 at Woodhouse Christ Church.2   They had six sons and two daughters, named Harry, George, Arthur, John, Albert, Frank, Annie and Ethel.
