Oldfield was born in 1846 in Almondbury.1   Oldfield's father was William Stocks and his mother was Alice Oldfield.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Stocks and Sally (Ann) Tiffany. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Luke, Alexander, Martha and Eliza.  He was the oldest of the five known children. He had three half-brothers and five half-sisters, named Allin, Hamor, Charles, Sarah, Mary, Martha, Ann and Hannah.
