Martha was born in 1763 in Kirkheaton and her baptism took place there on November 20th, 1763.1  Martha's father was Emanuel Stocks and her mother was Susanna (Hannah) Wood.  Her paternal grandparents were Joshua Stocks and Elizabeth Bingley. She had nine brothers and three sisters, named Isaac, Peter, Joseph, Benjamin, Joseph, Emanuel, Ruth, Thomas, Michael, Mary, Susanah and Elizabeth.
