John's father was Samuel Stocks and his mother was Selina Rowe. His paternal grandparents were George Stocks and Priscilla Thornton. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Harry, George, Arthur, Albert, Frank, Annie and Ethel. He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
