Ethel was born in 1884 in Bridgehouse. Ethel's father was Samuel Stocks and her mother was Selina Rowe. Her paternal grandparents were George Stocks and Priscilla Thornton. She had six brothers and a sister, named Harry, George, Arthur, John, Albert, Frank and Annie. She was the third youngest of the eight children.
