John's father was Charles Stocks and his mother was Sally (Ann) Tiffany.  His paternal grandparents were William Stocks and Sarah Brook. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Joseph, Richard, William, Sally, Sarah, Hannah and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 1 in November 1793 in Mirfield.  He was buried on November 27th, 1793 at St. Mary (Mirfield).¹
