John was born in March 1856 in Bolton and his baptism took place on October 12th, 1856 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  John's father was Robert Smith and his mother was Ann (Nancy) Crompton.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Smith and Alice Taylor. He had three brothers and two sisters, named George, John, William, Mary and Margaret.  He was the second oldest of the six known children.  He died at the age of 2 in April 1858 in Bolton.  His burial was in April 1858 at Tonge-with-Haulgh Cemetery.2 3
