Nathan's father was John Slater and his mother was Margaret Hey. His paternal grandparents were Michael Pickles and Jane Slater. He had a brother and three sisters, named Thomas, Jane, Betty and Sarah. He was the fourth oldest of the five children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Abraham, Mary and Alice.
