Thomas was born in February 1834 in Lockwood and his baptism took place there on April 6th, 1834.¹²

Thomas' father was William Shaw and his mother was Martha Stocks. His maternal grandparents were Samuel Stocks and Sally (Sarah) Brook. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Henry, John, Jane, Sarah Ann and Emily. He was the third youngest of the six children.
