John's father was William Shaw and his mother was Martha Stocks. His maternal grandparents were Samuel Stocks and Sally (Sarah) Brook. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Henry, Thomas, Jane, Sarah Ann and Emily. He was the fifth oldest of the six children.
