Martha was born in 1831 in Sowerby. Martha's father was John Shaw and her mother was Amelia (Molly) Stocks. Her maternal grandparents were Samuel Stocks and Sally (Sarah) Brook. She had two brothers and four sisters, named George, Joseph, Ann, Ruth, Ellen and Sarah. She was the youngest of the seven children.General Notes
