George was born in 1881 in Huddersfield.1  George's father was Benjamin (Ben) Schofield and his mother was Emma (Jane) Stocks.  Jonadab Brook and Ruth Stocks were his grandparents through his mother's adoption.  Job Stocks and Lucy Crosland were his grandparents through his mother's adoption. He had two sisters named Annie and Edith. He had a foster brother named Herbert.
