Robert was born in 1822.  Robert's father was James Ridyard and his mother was Ellen Mather.  His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann (Nancy) Greenwood. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, Samuel, Mary and Betsy.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
