Betsy was born in 1826 in Leigh and her baptism took place there on April 2nd, 1826. Betsy's father was James Ridyard and her mother was Ellen Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann (Nancy) Greenwood. She had three brothers and a sister, named Joseph, Robert, Samuel and Mary.  She was the fourth oldest of the five children.
