John was born on August 21st, 1788 in Blackrod and his christening took place on September 8th, 1788 at St. Katherine (B'rod).1  John's father was Joseph Riding and his mother was Molly Gorner. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, James, Bernard, Margaret, Mary and Alice.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
