James was born on January 8th, 1793 in Blackrod and his christening took place on January 25th, 1793 at St. Katherine (B'rod).1  James' father was Joseph Riding and his mother was Molly Gorner. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, Bernard, Margaret, Mary and Alice.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
