William's father was Richard Orrell and his mother was Margaret Ellen Taylor. His paternal grandparents were Richard Orrell and Sarah Gorse. He had a brother and four sisters, named Norman, Marian, Dora, Margaret and Clarice. He was the third youngest of the six children.
