Robert's father was Humphrey Nightingale and his mother was Alice Nightingale.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Nightingale and Maria Hodson. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, James, Humphrey, Miles, Mary, Betty, Alice and Margaret.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.
