Mary's father was Humphrey Nightingale and her mother was Alice Nightingale.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Nightingale and Maria Hodson. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Robert, John, James, Humphrey, Miles, Betty, Alice and Margaret.  She was the oldest of the nine children.
