James' father was Humphrey Nightingale and his mother was Alice Nightingale.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Nightingale and Maria Hodson. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Robert, John, Humphrey, Miles, Mary, Betty, Alice and Margaret.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
