John's father was Humphrey Nightingale and his mother was Alice Nightingale.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Nightingale and Maria Hodson. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Robert, James, Humphrey, Miles, Mary, Betty, Alice and Margaret.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 14 on July 9th, 1770 in Horwich.¹
