Sarah's father was John Nelson and her mother was Ann Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were (Ann) Mather and Sarah Jackson. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, James, Francis, Sarah and Mary.  She was the second youngest of the six children.  She died at the age of 4 in 1858 in Edgworth.¹
