Sarah's father was John Nelson and her mother was Ann Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were (Ann) Mather and Sarah Jackson. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, James, Francis, Mary and Sarah.  She was the oldest of the six children.  She died at the age of 1 in 1840 in Edgworth.¹
