Francis' father was John Nelson and his mother was Ann Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Isaac Mather and Sarah Jackson. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, James, Sarah, Mary and Sarah.  He was the youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 67 in April 1923 in Turton.²
